READ, which began in 2012, is a cooperative effort between Headwaters and Rappahannock County Elementary School, and provides on-site tutoring to Rappahannock’s youngest readers. READ mentors work with youth in Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade to spark excitement about reading, assist with site word identification, and decoding.

he READ Program will run alongside the After-School Enrichment Program. Students will get to enjoy a healthy snack and outdoor time before spending time with their reading mentor.

Reading mentors work with designated students in a structured environment and meet one to two times per week for most of the school year. Supported with targeted curriculum, guidance, training and the presence of other tutors, each READ mentor works with one child, allowing for the natural development of a respectful one-on-one relationship. The READ Manager participates in each tutoring session and communicates the curriculum goals and teacher expectations to ensure each pair is adequately prepared for the session.

If you are an imaginative reader that loves working with the youngest members of our community and feels compelled to give back, consider volunteering in our program! We will train you, support you throughout your tutoring, and guide you in being a positive force in young person’s life.
