The Complementary Staff Development program was launched with the support of several key community members when Headwaters sent two RCPS teachers to the Math, Science, and Technology Conference at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and two others to the Middle School Mathematics and Technology Conference at the Peddie School in 2004. The program complements the existing professional development budget and strategy at RCPS.

Since then, the program has supported faculty professional growth opportunities from Cambridge training to the Oxford conference, from national conferences on literacy to regional trainings on educational technology.

A committee of teachers and other local leaders consider applications once they have been approved by the building principal and the Assistant Superintendent for HR and Instruction.
