Here are lists of summer camps and summer enrichment programs available to those of you who are interested in doing something exciting this summer!  The list is by no means exhaustive.  If you don’t see a program, camp or school that suits your fancy, we can help you find what you’re looking for.  Just give us a call at (540) 987-3322 or stop by the Next Step office at the high school. Can’t afford it?  Many programs offer scholarships, and Headwaters can help there too.  There’s even a program that will pay you to attend.  The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation pays a stipend of $500 for students ages 14 – 17 to work in assigned state parks for three weeks in the summer to complete environmental projects.  No more excuses. The time for summer dreams is now as many of these programs fill up early!

Learn how statewide leaders are changing the food in their school by connecting with local growers, working to change policies at the state and national level, eat a locavore lunch of student-grown greens, roasted veggies, and locally-raised free range chicken, and take a tour of one of the leading innovative programs in the state that is teaching kids in the classroom, in the garden, and in the lunchroom that FOOD MATTERS.

In the afternoon, teachers will be trained by professional Ag in The Classroom trainers to incorporate agriculture into everyday teaching using Virginia SOL standards. All current teachers who are interested in this training can attend this portion of the workshop for free!

Come to this informative workshop, hear statewide panelists discuss their programs, take a tour, eat a locavore lunch, and leave with a seeding schedule to synch your growing season up with the school year, multi-disciplinary lesson plans, and lots of resources from the Virginia Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom Program! Rappahannock County Promotes Sustainable Agriculture and Land Stewardship during Its 2010 Farm Tour Weekend, September 25 – 26

Weekend tour-goers will experience personally what the Buy Fresh /Buy Local movement is all about during the second annual Rappahannock County Farm Tour Weekend, September 25 – 26.

Nearly 20 Rappahannock farms, orchards, and wineries—as well as farm-to-table student programs and environmental organizations—will participate in this countywide, self-guided, family-friendly farm tour. Tour-goers can pick up tour maps, buy local products and listen to presentations at the “All Things Rappahannock” Market at The Link community center (the historic Sperryville Schoolhouse, 12018 Lee Highway (Route 211) in Sperryville, which also will serve as the starting point for the tour.  Registration begins at 9 a.m. at The Link, and the tour will run from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine.  Admission is a $5 donation per person; admission is free for children 15 and younger.

Farm-to-Table will be hosting student-run tours of our brand new elementary school garden from 10-1 Saturday and Sunday. Make your way to RCHS in the afternoons each day from 2-5 for student tours, a lesson in hoophouse production and season extension and press your own apple cider. Please come around to the rear of both schools for garden access. Hope to see you there!

On Saturday evening, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m., join locals for an evening of music and refreshments to benefit the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection (RLEP.org), a local, citizen-based conservation group.  Tickets are $25 and include light refreshments and live music. The dance will be held at Rappahannock Central at the River District, 3 River Lane, in Sperryville. Proceeds will benefit the RLEP’s conservation programs.
